50th Anniversary March on Washington
  • 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

On August 27th hundreds of citizens attended the 2013 Conference on Civil Rights: Marching Forward By Looking Back. The following morning, on August 28, 2013, thousands of citizens, from across this country, converged upon our nation’s capital to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.
This site provides opportunities for people to share remembrances of and pictures from both marches. Additionally, visitors to this site can get updates on a variety of ongoing civil rights initiatives intended to make Dr. King’s dream a reality.

    Thank you for your support!

Nice to see they’re taking us seriously.

Ok. I’m confused regarding timing. So is President Obama speaking BEFORE the official March begins. The 8:15 am time is throwing me off. It seems to conflict with the current schedule for the day’s March here on the website.

Ms.Nicholson: we do not know what time exactly the President will be speaking. Those details havent been provided yet. We think its safe to assune that it wont be at 8:15 am though. That is the time we will begin gathering for the March for Jobs and Justice – which begins at 600 New Jersey Avenue NW. The President is speaking on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial which is where we will be marching. to.

are there actually two separate marches? One on the 24th and one on the 28th???

  • VanWhite

There are many events celebrating the March on Washington. Accordingly there is a March planned for August 28th – the details for which are on our web site. Actually we learned last week that President Obama will be speaking from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the 28th. Our understanding is that there is a reenactment scheduled for August 24th. This event does not conflict in substance or timing with the event on August 28th. We’re certain that Both events will be powerful and impact full events.

I am a 23 year old community activist that is helping to host a youth conference for the MOW. This youth conference happens to be listed on this website:officialmlkdream50.com

When speaking to one of my friends who I invited to join the March activities (I want to get him motivated to start organizing black youth in his own community) he told me that he came to this website and did not see any of the youth events taking place over the weekend.

Mr. Van, can you please post all of the events (or at least the link to officialmlkdream50.com website on your homepage). When you google “50th anniversary march on washington” this website comes up first, so I fear that people are coming to this website and then missing the plethora of other events taking place all of this week and throughout the weekend.

My friend literally told me “there arent any youth events happening on the agenda for the March that I saw.”

Mr. Van, i fear that more people have come to this website and have missed the opportunity to see all the events happening. Please post the full lists of events here also, so folks not connected to any large organizations can see everything that is happening.

Thank you for your time and consideration

We MUST keep the fight going. It’s amazing to me that people in 2013 still continue to believe that we “have already overcome”. Look around you, then get busy! “Let us march on, till victory is WON!” And thank you Dr. King for starting something that can not be stopped. Some continue to fight progress (see latest Voting Rights Issues)-but we WILL overcome, someday.

In order to promote justice among the races, will President Obama, in his speech tomorrow, tell blacks that they need to stop assaulting whites at 40 times the rate that whites assault blacks?

My God, My God only you know the truth of each man’s heart… We are witnessing our own down fall… judgement falls on any nation that turns it back on God.. The result is obama, he shall rule over us as… KING, and DICTATOR….allowing our enemies to waltz on in here and rule over us… Plead with Lord Jesus, for mercy.. call out to him… ask him forgive you for all sins… His grace is beautiful and free.. amen.
