50th Anniversary March on Washington
  • 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

On August 27th hundreds of citizens attended the 2013 Conference on Civil Rights: Marching Forward By Looking Back. The following morning, on August 28, 2013, thousands of citizens, from across this country, converged upon our nation’s capital to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.
This site provides opportunities for people to share remembrances of and pictures from both marches. Additionally, visitors to this site can get updates on a variety of ongoing civil rights initiatives intended to make Dr. King’s dream a reality.

    Thank you for your support!

  • Bonnie

We need clarification. I was given the date of August 24th not August 28th
last weekend at a rally by the National Action Network. What is the correct date or are you suggesting there will be 2 MOW anniversary marches ? If that is the case, neither one will be as successful or effective as one large one would be. If that is the case all groups need to get it together, put egos aside
and have one march. This is the time for communication and strategizing not grand standing.

    • Vannessa Francine Johnson

I totally agree I do hope this is not an ego thing…..one march is all we need it will show better…peace

    • VanWhite

We would agree that collaboration is key. However collaboration can not occur until there is communication. For our part we have made (and will continue to make) efforts to reach out to other organizations to ensure that we are all on the same page. This web site is an example of that as we regularily post events and activities of other organizations.

      • Jeremiah Thompson

        Hi,

My name is Elder Jeremiah Thompson, President/”Ceo of Keep The Dream Alive Community Development Corp. I have been doing the character interpretation of Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Since 1993. I would like to recite a speech by Dr. King in honor of him at the March. Please pass my info to the appropriate person so that this can happen. My number is 267-595-5659 Email: Jeremiah2472@aol.com

    • Culture Mix

and by having it on the 24th is a much better idea,.. seeing that it is a saturday,..more people would be off work and come in for the full weekend

    • TheRealHousewifeOfPG

Uh, thank you. I live in PG County which is a suburb of Wash, DC and I’m very active in the community which is how and why I came to understand there are indeed two marches planned. My feelings are as you expressed–one march would demonstrate the unity that we seek after among other things.

    • Anne Ominous

maybe some dates don’t work for some people. Wednesdays might be a difficult day for some to participate but that is the true anniversary date. regardless of how this makes you feel, this is about more than you and there will be two marches.

    • amy

It appears there is only one march on 8/28. On 8/23, the museums on the mall and close by will have various exhibits and programs commemorating the march.

      See http://newsone.com/2694168/march-on-washington-events/

    • melvin

You have missed the point the Saturday march is for the youth and on a day when most are not working as school starts on Monday. The actual anniversary is August 28, to date when there will be a march to the Lincoln memorial where Dr. King spoke. So it is not about ego’s but convenience and historical perspective.

  • tareena

When is the actual March of Washington date? Is it Saturday the 24th or Wedn the 28th?? Please clarify bc I am takin off work, as well as pulln my kids f school. Thank u!

    • Carolyn Keys

      the 28th

    • VanWhite

The blessing here is you have a choice. You can attedn the events on the 24th. Because that is a weekend that may make it easier for some. However, if you like the idea of having the march on the date of the actual anniversary please join us on th 28th. Better yet, if you want to make this event truky meaningful encourage others to attend the conference on civil rights on August 27th. That information is on the web site as well.

      • activebz

It seems a real shame that there are TWO marches which lessens the impact of one UNIFIED and unifying march. Sounds like a real lack of coordination and consideration! A weakened presentation and impact may well follow. But I’m still going on the 24th, the first date that was announced.

        • VanWhite

          Activebz

We too value “coordination and consideration”. But you can’t have those two values without communication. Despite our best efforts we just were unable to get organizers to communicate with us. Second, while you may have become aware of the August 24 event “first”, does not necessarily mean they announced first. The August 24 event was announced sometime in June if 2013. This site was launched in January of 2013 and our Facebook page was launched in December of 2012. Finally, in the end, everyone (like yourself) must chose which date (for whatever reason) which works for them. For example, personally, because I am able will attend both events – and perhaps other events which you may not be aware of. President Obama has also chosen to commemorate this important event in history on the August 28th. That dies not mean he does not support the events taking place on the 24th ( in fact sure he does.). In the end we all have to chose what woeks best for each of us individually but chose to support each other collectively.

          • justthefacts

Mr. White: I appreciate the tactful manner in which you have addressed the issue of “two marches. I’ll see you on August 27 and 28. i booked my flight in May when I learned of the March that was planned for August 28.

          • dcdotcom

Facebook for some is not the place to go to receive information on issues. I only came aware of this website by a search engine. Some my not have computers to do that. How else is the word getting out by your organization? I’m thinking the “DRUM” may be working overtime.
I sent out an email blast to friends and family thinking the march on August 24th was being held because it is a weekend. Will send another email blast informing friends and family that the August 28th march is the one were the President will be speaking.

          • VanWhite

Thank you! Hopefully that drum beat will get louder over the next week or so.

          • TheRealHousewifeOfPG

Ms. VanWhite, please don’t be insulted by my statement; but people already know what their options are without you stating the obvious. In getting back to the issue, some of us are a little put off to think that the leaders of these marches who should actually be bringing people together to demonstrate unity and solidarity and a continued commitment to our joint causes; yet, it seems the LEADERS aren’t even together. I want to remain as positive as I can; but you’re sounding so patronizing and a little condescending while evading the issue. Not to suggest the Aug 24th planners are any better; but In addressing communication, maybe your organization could have reached out to those other organizations in December 2012 in an effort to plan together.

          • VanWhite

I did reach out to them in 2012 and in 2013.

          • Allegra Bennett

It is Mr. Van White. And, we really must stop choosing to be offended as our first reaction to things we don’t like. It’s just not helpful.

          • JasmineDenise

I wish I would’ve known of two marches. I learned of the Saturday the 24th march first. And I was not directed to this site until I was interested in the “other” events going on around the anniversary. Imagine the confusion when I saw two different marches on the schedule of events document. Anyway, I would’ve liked to enjoy my weekend in a different way because I was a little disappointed in the resulting program on teh 24th with two minute speeches by too many organization representatives, no demands for changes like the original (that I heard), and a parade/photo opportunity for speakers rather than a resulting march of all attendees and speakers. I hope Wednesday is better. The meeting place is near my job and I’m debating if I will bring my daughter.

      • Jillian Smith

Coming from Rhode Island. Are backpacks allowed?

        • VanWhite

Yes certainly during the march but there might be done restrictions once you get to the national mall

    • Culture Mix

august 24th,.saturday, be there do NOT miss this great historic day,…come march and rally with the Rev. Al Sharpton,.. Martin Luther King III,..Congressman John Lewis and many many more.

    • TheRealHousewifeOfPG

There are two different marches planned by two different groups. The one on the 24th is called the “Continuation of the March”. The one scheduled for the 28th is being promoted on this site.–a little shocking, eh?

  • Kirsten Olson

I’ll be there spreading peace and marching for equality and justice.

  • Jimmy Ray Adams

I am a black cinematographer in Miami, I’m in the process of seeking permission and permits to film and document his historical event. Please wish me luck and help in attaining this feat….thank you

    • Eclectic Caduceator

I need you to email me inclusivecutsandstyles@gmail.com please

    • barbaralee12

Mr. Adams did you succeed in filming this event? If so i am interested in getting a copy if at all possible.Thank-you.

      • Jimmy Ray Adams

Yes I did. The NAN gave me the runaround with numbers to call with no one to answer them…and when they did answer, they said I was in the wrong department. So I took matters in my own hands and filmed anyway. We black people need to get more organize or at least be on the same page. Despite the hassle, everything turned out beautifully. Stay in touch with me ..and when I finish editing my works…you will be able to see the results…

        • barbaralee12

Thank you so much Jimmy and you are so right we need unity now more than ever.I will stay in touch thanks again

  • Tracy Holloman

I’ll be there as well. I was born on the exact day that the march took place and will be celebrating the 50th anniversary and my 50th birthday!

    • 2012 Marcher

What?! You’re 50 yrs old? No way!

    • James Olverson

Congratulations! What a wonderful way to celebrate history and your own special day. I was 11 years old when I saw the march on TV and went with a group from my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA for the 20th anniversary of the march in 1983. It was so exciting then and I’m looking forward to the 50th anniversary..

    • Gwenda K. Washington

Wishing you an early Happy 50th Birthday and welcome to the club. Membership is a privilege. I entered the Fabulous Fifties two years ago.

  • Vicki Yeroian

I think I found the answer. There are two rallies, one on the weekend, one on the actual anniversary. Thank you all so much!

  • ipatrol

Justice must be levied, then peace will follow.
As for jobs, keep in mind this: the ruling class cannot and will not give us full employment. Such a thing would undermine profits and destroy capitalism. The capitalist/consumerist system cannot be satiated, and if we do not slay it, it will grow until it collapses, crushing us all. A better world is possible, one where we may dine on the meat of the beast under a canopy of its skin, just as God promised us so long ago. A better world is possible.
As for inequality, it is an ingenious system designed to pit the working/middle class against each other. It keeps us looking down at each other instead up at our oppressors. Meanwhile, these oppressors continue to piss on us while calling it rain. Trickle-down my ass.
The time will come when we will be forced to replace our dysfunctional system of false democracy laid atop a foundation of exploitation. Be it velvet or violent, the revolution will come. In the mean time, let’s give the ruling class a hell of a good scare so that perhaps some of them will come out with their hands up when the rebel army reaches their mansions.
MLKJ was killed for turing his attention to economic equality. Why else was he killed while leading a sanitation strike? Capitalism is perfectly willing and able to exploit us all equally, but that exploitation can only last as long as some are deprived of their needs while others wallow in luxury.

So comrades come rally, and the last fight, let us face. The Internationale, unites the human race!

  • Culture Mix

ok my question is, why is there a march on washington for this date,.in the middle of a work week when in fact there will be a grand march on washington planned on the 24th of saturday ?

  • VanWhite

The answer to your question is that both dates are correct. The march scheduled for August 28 is an actual march schedule to start at 8:3pm am going first to the Department of Labor; then to the Department of Justice; then on to the National Mall for further activities there. A permit has been issued by the DC Police Dpt. for this march. As you probably figured out, we pick this date because it falls on the date of the actual anniversary. This was a very important factor in our decision. The event scheduled for the 24th is being described as a reenactment. That date was chosen, we believe, because it falls on a weekend. That may be more convenient for some. We hope and pray that with these wonderful choices people will be able to participate in a manner which is most convenient for them.

  • ndb_USA

Do people who were there in 1963 just show up to lead or are specific people being chosen? I was there and plan to march this time too.

    • VanWhite

For the march on August 28, veterans from the 63 march will be asked to march up front. We are also asking former marchers to participate in a panel discussion on the evening before. Are you interested? We would be honored if you participated?

      • ndb_USA

Where will the discussion be and what time? I live in St, Mary’s County which is about 2 hours from DC.

        • VanWhite

The panel discussion will take place at the Washington Court Hotel 535 New Jersey Avenue NW at 9:00 am.

  • Jaybird

Wish you all the best! One note — please make sure folks know the exact address ie NW DC. It can be confusing for out of towners.

  • VanWhite

Yes the address for the august 27 conference is 535 New Jersey Ave NW (details of the conference are on the web site). The August 28 march will begin at 600 New Jersey Ave NW.

  • Diane Sharp

I’ll be marching with my son, who now lives in DC, in honor of my dad who was there in ’63.

  • justthefacts

I just booked 2 nights (August 27 and 28) at the Washington Court Hotel (site of the conference) for $95 per night through Bookit.com; the number of rooms at this rate are limited.

    • VanWhite

Great! Btw all of that info re discounts at the Washington court hotel is already on the web.

      • justthefacts

As of Sat. Aug. 10, the Special Rates page of the website does not list the Washington Court Hotel as one the hotels with discount rates.

        • VanWhite

Thats because the Washington Court Hotel was never one of the hotels where we had an arrangement with. Only the hotels listed. Some might have assumed that because that is where the conference is taking place. But no they have never been listed there. (Although we recently approached them about it. They have discussed some lower rates but we have nothing official yet.

          • justthefacts

            ok.

  • dcdotcom

It is somewhat confusing regarding the march(s) for the 50th Anniversary March on Washington. I initial thought the only march was being held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the Lincoln Memorial. I now read that there is another march scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, at the Lincoln Memorial (is this the one the president will speak at)?. It would be advantageous for all who want to attend “the” march(s) to make it clear that there are 2 marches scheduled.

    • VanWhite

Since last December 2012 (0n our Facebook page) and later on our web site we have consistently listed that date. However realism zing there might be some confusion, we reached out to the organizers of the August 24th event do we could have a coordinated message. We have not had much success in our attempt at collaboration thus far. But we still have hope and will work to send a message of cooperation and coordination.

      • dcdotcom

VanWhite, appreciate your response….however not everyone reads or has Facebook downloaded, nor want to download it. So another form of communicating to the masses, some of whom may not be computer savvy would be helpful. I’m surprise and disappointed that there has not been any response to your outreach to coordinate the message. Some people are coming to Washington, DC for the August 24 march thinking it’s the march were the President will be speaking.

I concur with “Bonnie” response above, “This is the time for communication and strategizing not grand standing.” I sincerely hope both marches will be a success but one might experience a drop in participation. The media is going to love this one…..

  • gary smethurst

I will be marching with my son and his wife, I feel blessed to have lived long enough to see some progress, I have joy knowing that our progress will continue, but we must continue to affirm positive energy by showing our numbers and sharing our love for equality for all. Looking forward to joining with all of you to continue to manifest the Dream and the Light.

    • Roger S.J. Sattler

Well spoken! Couldn’t agree more with spreading the Love and the Light. At 70, I am equally blessed. Thank you and see you there!

    • dolphin558

      Ok

  • Ali V

I saw a website that said the March on Washington will be on the 28th. Is
    that correct?

No. The National Action to Realize the Dream March is taking place
on Saturday, August 24th and is part of the official schedule of events being
hosted by the King Family, four of the remaining organizations who executed the
1963 March – A. Philip Randolph Institute, NAACP, National Urban League, and
SCLC in conjunction with NAN, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation
(NCBCP), National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), National Park Service, The
Children’s Defense Fund and The Skinner Leadership Institute. The full schedule
of events can be found by visiting mlkdream50.com. The march on August 28th is
being led by a private citizen and is not part of the official events.

  • Ali V

The information below comes from the FAQ’s on http://nationalactionnetwork.net/mow/

  • Ali V

The fact that there are two Marches and both are saying neither are the official. NAN lets you register for the March for free and 50thanniversarymarchonwashington.com makes you pay. Since when do you pay to March. Marching is a free right/exercise. I’m sure they both have good cause and I hope that they both turn out to be peaceful.

    • VanWhite

No you do not pay for the march on the 28th. It’s FREE. The conference on civil rights has a registration fee. But you don’t have to attend the conference to attend the march.

  • Antinique Rawlings

Ill be there to show my kids the importance of this movement!

  • Anita Jackson

Please explain why both events are not being promoted together.? I understand Saturday would be easier for folks but the movement was not about being easy. This lack of publicity reflects badly on he memory of all who risks it all to fight for the rights we now enjoy.

    • VanWhite

      A sincere effort was
Made to coordinate our message and work collaboratively. But that did not happen as I would have liked. For example we proposed that we share and exchange web site links on our respective sites. Unfortunately that never happened. However I don’t think there was any ill intent in the creasing behind why that didn’t happen. I just think when you are trying to put something like this together it’s easy to get distracted by so many important things. So while we gave them our website info and never heard back trust me I know what that was about. Putting together an event as they did yesterday is a tremendous undertaking and as a result you(1) have to prioritize; (2) sometimes miss things; (3) have to focus on your core mission and nothing else. So lets congratulate all the people who worked so hard to pull off the events on the 24th. For those of us who are here you know it was a job well done! BUT remember OUR work is not finished. We’ve got the conference on the 27th and the March on the 28th. Thanks for all of your support!

  • VanWhite

For posters concerned about publicity and how the events on the 24th and 28th are related, i think as these events draw nearer there will be more news coverage of the various activities and how they are related to each other. Just yesterday I picked up three newspapers that mentioned the events on the 24th and the 28th and a whole lot of other exciting activities in between.

  • Marcus Long

The location needs to be specified. Is it 600 New Jersey Avenue NORTHEAST? Or SOUTHEAST? Both are relatively close to the Capitol building and other memorials. Please verify.

  • patty pretty

Can I march with a folding camp chair for use at the Lincoln Memorial?

  • VanWhite

Yes folding/collapseable chairs are allowed so long as it folds and can be put into a case and carried by hand or on your shoulder.

  • Clive Foster

Hello All, my name is Clive Foster and I have decided to come over to Washington from England, UK to go on the march representing our church in Nottingham, England – I am looking for a place to stay in Washington any ideas?

    • justthefacts

I would suggest the Washington Court Hotel. Check the internet for reasonable rates. Try the website Bookit.com. I think it’s wonderful that you are coming.

  • justthefacts

For all who are attending. here is a link to an article in today’s Washington Post with some useful information http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/travel-tips-for-events-marking-50th-anniversary-of-march-on-washington/2013/08/17/60b28d12-0293-11e3-a07f-49ddc7417125_story.html

  • Susan Friedman

Is there a NOW presence for the 24th March? I was also told the 24th and will be coming in from Chicago. Where and when is NOW gathering?

  • john

Hi. Will I be allowed to photograph at the March? It’s not for commercial gain.

Also, in joining this march, will there already be an assembled crowd at the National Mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial?

    • VanWhite

Yes you will be allowed to photograph. We expect to arrive at the mall anywhere between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm. Not certain whether people will already be at the Mall.

      • john

        Thank you for the response.

Are you connected at all with this group? http://officialmlkdream50.com

Looks like the March will converge with what’s already going on? It’s hard. I want to be there for both and be closer for photos and hearing.

I am a “veteran” who will be marching with my daughter – any place we should assemble on August 28 in particular?

  • Julia Chance

Any approximations as to the time that Wed.”s march will end?

    • VanWhite

The march from 600 New Jersey Ave NW to the National Mall is 1.6 miles. Hard to say how long that will take without knowing size of the crowd; traffic conditions; etc.

  • Ana Garcia Ashley

Gamaliel’s staff and leaders will be there because we are all about collaboration and organizing for jobs!!!!!!!!!!

Do we have to register and pay to attend or are we allowed to simply attend the march? With the cost of travel, this trip will be hard hitting financially, and the added cost to show support for a cause my family strongly believes in may actually prevent us from attending at all. Thank you.

    • Daphne

Hannah, as far as I know, there is no cost for marching–only the conferences the day before. I hear you about the cost of travel, but this is one of those events in life that you will look back on and be very happy you were a part of it! Take care, Daphne from California.

  • Daphne

I have read some of the requests concerning clarification of the dates of the marches. However, the date of the actual MOW has never been in dispute–it’s always been Aug. 28th. Before we criticize the organizers of the marches, let’s not forget the events occurring days before and following this historic commemoration: the murder of Medgar Evers and the bombing of the church in Birmingham which killed four little girls. These are just two tragedies that marked this period. Much has changed after 1963, but much remains to be changed. I will be travelling from California to be there on Wednesday, Aug. 28th and cannot wait to march, rally, and hear Pres. Obama recite Dr. King’s speech. I want to personally thank the coordinators of this site for the detailed information that has allowed me to organize my trip to a tea! Keeping the dream alive!!!!

    • VanWhite

Thank you Daphne for your words of support! I have participated in the events thus far and it has been wonderful. There is more to come and we believe that the march and speeches by our PresidentS ( that’s right I said Presidents) will be a perfect way to end this week of celebration and commemoration!

      • LaVaeda Coulter

I would ask that no no ill feelings be harbored regarding the myriad of communications concerning the two marches. I myself had gone to a website to get infer concerning the events and it mentioned Saturday as a day for the march and then Wednesday as a day for the Three Presidents speaking at the Lincoln Memorial. There was nothing about the march on Wednesday and no information was provided that said the march on Saturday was for the youth. I myself did not find out about the March on Wednesday until Saturday evening which came from a friend who had just came from the March on Saturday. So there happened to be a lot of communication that needed to take place that didn’t. Just chalk it up as lessons learned for the planning of the next monumental event. God bless you all who are engaged in the planning efforts. It is a lot of work and oftentimes a thankless job. So for all us I say “Thank You” for all of the hard work you did and your time and effort as well. I will be there on Wednesday and will try to make the events on Tuesday as well.

  • Diane Sharp

I will be there with my son and girlfriend. Can’t wait! My dad marched 50 years ago and he’ll be with us in spirit.

    • VanWhite

My dad who marched in 63 will be there in spirit as well. We are blessed to be able to march with our own children in this march. See you there!

  • Azalee Turner

I hope the issue of two marches has been resolved for some people. I just learned that there are two marches. My first reaction was to find out if the wrong date was being given out. Once I found out the reason for the two events, I thought to myself, “How great is that! Dr. King deserves to have two or more marches in his honor!”
And since there are so many unresolved problems in America, it might be an advantage to have each march with an underlying theme or purpose.
Lastly, I did not readily think about disunity in regards to the marches. The fact that one is held on the actual anniversary date sounds like the way it should be. The one being held today is just as appropriate.
    We need both.
Thank God for the leaders of both events.

    • Joanne Jefferson

Thank you for your words of wisdom. Yes Dr.King does deserve 2 marches!

    • justthefacts

After watching today’s march on TV, I have come to believe there is a deeper backstory to the two marches. The “lack of communications” and “lack of unity”issues are probably a minor players in the whole game…and unfortunately we have become the pawns. Remember, this is ultimately about politics and this IS Washington,D.C., where decisions are often based on “optics.” I will be there on Tuesday and Wednesday, and I hope that we all come away from the experiences with a stronger conviction to make a positive difference for our communities.

    • VanWhite

Thank God for your wisdom. Lolling forward to seeing and others there!

    • Danita Rountree Green

I so agree with you!! March on!! I think it is great and a tribute to a great man, an historic event and a powerful people.

  • Gwenda K. Washington

I see nothing wrong with having two Marches. It never once crossed my mind there was a division or any type of un-organization or a disrespect towards the idea of unity. I am sure I am not the only person who feels this way. Many people want to participate and two Marches allows many to celebrate the anniversary and participate who otherwise may not have been able to participate. As for advertisement every online news media site I visited during the week gave information and links to both Marches along with it’s sponsors. I am flying from Denver Colorado to D.C. on the 27th. I REALLY want to participate in the March on the 28th but I REALLY want to be up close at the Lincoln Memorial for a good view and good pictures of President Obama as he stands and addresses the nation in the same spot Rev. Dr. King stood as he addressed thousands on that historical day. Being able to participate in the 28th March will be a great honor for me but to be able to witness up close President Obama, a part of that dream Dr. King envisioned and spoke of 50 years ago, will also be a super honor for me as well. My concern is if I participate in the March (not knowing how long the March will take) we could possibly miss some of the President speaking as well as by the time we get to the Lincoln Memorial crowds would have already assembled hours ahead putting us so far out from the site of the Lincoln Memorial there would be no way to get pictures or even view anything except the backs and heads of the crowds in front of us :). I’m debating whether to skip the march and just go directly to the Lincoln Memorial early Wednesday morning in order to make sure I get a good sight line. I don’t know…..I’m still so mixed on what I should do.

    • Gwenda K. Washington

A perfect itinerary for me would have been if I was able to schedule time off for the 23rd through 29th…..I would have flown into D.C. on Friday 23rd and attended todays 24th March…..get an early start to the Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday morning to get a good sight line to hear all the speakers up close at the Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday from 1:00 to 5:30 with President Obama. Oh well schedules don’t always work out the way we would like for them to. I just got home from work today the 24th and now off until September 2nd. Looking for a travel buddy or a hang buddy while in D.C. I am traveling alone.

    • justthefacts

It is my understanding that the march on the 28th will begin at between 8:00am and 9:00am. The ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. That should leave enough time to to attend both events. However, there is still the matter of how close you will be to the Lincoln Memorial. I am sure there will be reserved seating for VIPs and we “regular folks” will be kept at a distance from the Memorial for the obvious security reasons. So I wouldn’t worry about being able to be close enough to get for a good view and/or pictures.

      • Gwenda K. Washington

Thank you for your reply…I read on the King Center website the event starts at 11:00 at the Lincoln and the white house press release also confirms event will begin promptly at 11:00 (doors open at 9:00). March stats at 9:00 estimated to end between noon and 1:00 p.m. per Mr. White. It appears there will be an overlap of the two events..

    • justthefacts

Revision to my earlier post: Some sources are saying the event at the Lincoln Memorial will begin at 11:30 am. At the this point it is hard to say what time the ceremony at the Lincoln memorial will begin. Maybe we will have a better idea by Tuesday.

    • VanWhite

Thank you for speaking to the issue of the “two marches”. However I would ask that you please don’t skip the march. This is going to be a powerful and moving experience from start to finish. We are beginning this march in a way that you will remember for years. At the steps of historic Georgetown Law School Young folks (College and high school scholars and leaders) will present “veterans” of the 63 march with a special gift that they will place on the veterans and the veterans will do the same for the young leaders. They will then both take their place at the front of the march together. In terms of timing, we will gather at 6:00 New Jersey Avenue NW at 8:00 am and begin marching at 9:00 am promptly. The march is only 1.6 miles long so we should get to the Lincoln Memorial in plenty of time for getting “good seats” at the Lincoln Memorial. Hope to see you there!

    • Clark Castle

Hi Gwenda. Are you aware that there is a “VIP” seating area directly in front of the Memorial? With that in mind I will be getting there as early as possible so that I don’t get stuck behind some “VIP” blocking the sight line. Hope this helps.

      • Gwenda K. Washington

Hi Clark! Yes I am aware there will be a VIP section directly in front of the Memorial. I attended both of President Obama’s Inaugurations and I figure the set up for the Lincoln Memorial will be pretty much the same…..1.VIP section 2.Restricted section…..some type of barricade or street…. 3. General Public section. During the first inauguration I did not know what to expect. As the news media suggested us to do, I arrived two hours before start of inauguration for passing through security screening thinking I had given myself plenty of time to get a good sight line. I had no idea people would start arriving 6 hours before the start of the inauguration. Arriving 2 hours before placed me so far back I didn’t feel as though I was apart of anything. I even had difficulty viewing the Jumbotrons because of the position I was standing. I felt it would have been better to have watched it on tv. The second inauguration I knew better was a much better experience for me. I got there much earlier and got a really good sight line. In fact I was on the front row standing right next to the barricade that separated the general section from the restricted section. The capital was in sight and with my binoculars I could see the president and all the speakers just fine. I felt included. Had a GREAT experience. The event Wednesday starts at 11:00 (some say 11:30). I am told if I participate in the March the Marchers will reach the Lincoln Memorial in time for the start of the event. My concern was if the March begins at 9:00 getting to the Lincoln Memorial just as it is about to start will put us REALLY far back in the mall so far away from the Lincoln Memorial that even the use binoculars will not help. I want it to be a good experience. So I am still deciding. I may give up a better experience at the Lincoln for a great experience with the March or then again I may give up a great experience with the March for a better experience at the Lincoln <3

        • VanWhite

We have walked the march described on the web site and getting a good seat should not be a problem. It’s only 1.6 miles.

          • Gwenda K. Washington

Thank you so much for your reply. If the march reaches the Lincoln Memorial between noon and 1:00 and the event at the Memorial begins at 11:00 what are the chances of us missing any part of President Clinton or President Obama’s speaking. Missing any of the program prior to that I will be ok with.

          • Gwenda K. Washington

Thank you for your reply informing me the march is 1.6 miles and that the march will reach the memorial in plenty enough time to get good seats as well as be there in plenty of time not to miss any of the Let Freedom Ring Commemorative event. But the ending times of the march seems to overlap with the start of the Commemorative event. You estimate the march to arrive at the Lincoln Memorial anywhere between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m.. The Let Freedom Ring Commemorative event begins promptly at 11:00. I am not so sure I want to miss up to two hours of the event since my primary reason for traveling from Denver to D.C. is to attend that event specific. I copied this from the official white house press release. Thank you for all your replies. I have decided not to participate in the march not wanting to risk not being admitted into the venue. I wish you much success with the march and I am sure it will be a great experience for those participating. Peace and Blessings to everyone XoXo
This event is open to the public. Doors open at 9:00 AM, for an 11:00
AM program start on Wednesday, August 28th at the Lincoln Memorial. Guests
arriving after 12:00 PM are not guaranteed admittance. In order to access the
venue, you must enter from the east side of the Reflecting Pool, on 17th street,
near the World War II Memorial.

          • VanWhite

Furthermore the let freedom ring ceremony which you refer to is not the time the president will speak. I’m sure let freedom ring ceremony will be wonderful but as for me I prefer the solidarity of marching on the date of the actual anniversary with like minded and spirited individuals. We shall be there together to hear our President.

that’s what you choose to participate in God

          • Gwenda K. Washington

Mr. White I live in a city (Denver, Colorado) where unfortunately there has been NO coverage or information available to me as it relates to the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington or it’s activities. African American culture events are not well advertised in this state (something the African American community here is working hard to change). So I seek info from the internet and word of mouth from citizens in other states to get the information I need.

It was not until Friday morning that I even knew there was a 50th anniversary celebrations being held in D.C. on August 28th at the Lincoln Memorial. I quickly decided I would like to be there to reflect, remember, and participate in commemorating and honoring that great historical day. While visiting some websites for information I came across your march. I became excited about participating So I took the information (timetable) you provided me as well as the information (timetable) taken from the white house website and the King Center’s website and I finalized my plans. I decided to share the press release here ONLY because others here had provided me with information they stated they were unsure of as well as yourself seemed to not be clear on certain information. So it was with good intentions I posted the white house press release here thinking it would clear up some of the timetable questions. It was not done with ill will or intentions to “MISINFORM” or “UNNECCESSARILY DISCOURAGE” people (as you have stated).

There is only one “Let Freedom Ring” event being held at the Lincoln Memorial so I am not sure why you are insinuating the event I speak of is not the same event where the president will be speaking.

From the White House Press Release:
To honor this occasion, President Obama will be joined Wednesday, August 28th, by President Jimmy Carter and President Bill Clinton, members of the King family and other civil rights leaders and luminaries at the Let Freedom Ring Commemoration and Call to Action event at the Lincoln Memorial, to commemorate Dr. King’s soaring speech and the 1963 March on Washington.

I have an article from The King Center that says event begins at 11:00 and it details many speakers, singers, dancers, International performers and two former presidents who will take to the stage prior to President Obama speaking. (so you are probably right in saying the President will not speak until 1:00 or well after). After reading the program information I decided to stay with my original plans of making my way to the Let Freedom Ring event early.

It appears that my decision may have touched a nerve with you because your reply to me came across very offensive. Maybe your reaction to my earlier posting came from a place that you have had to address remarks and negative comments from those who questions a second march but I am NOT one of those people. I welcomed your march. So I am very offended that you have suggested that because I am not attending your march I do not share the same spirit of what that historical day means, nor the unanimity of attitude or purpose in my heart as of you and those who will be attending your march. Regardless I am still sending Peace and Blessings your way.

          • Gwenda K. Washington

There’s no need for you to follow up with me. I think all that needs to be relayed has been effectively relayed.

          • VanWhite

Only God knows your intentions so please do not take offense toy assessment of others intentions if you do not share them. In fact accept my apologies. What I can tell you is that the conduct of others reveals a diminished respect for the good intentions of others. Conduct which suggests that their efforts can not be respected or appreciated if others receive similar support or encouragement. I may be wrong by what I perceive but sadly I think I am correct about what I’ve seen.

I would like to go but I will need to bring my children, will I be okay with a stroller for this march?

    • VanWhite

Yes it’s Ok to bring child. In marches such as this you might want to march on the side of the march with your stroller. Obviously you’ll use your own best judgment on where you will march with your child and stroller. See you there!

Hello, I was a 6 year old white girl-child riding on the shoulders of my father ( a white Dutch Reformed minister leading an African-American congregation in a church in Paterson NJ) during the first march in 1963. Looking forward to being there again with my partner, an Afro-Cuban woman. Now so many years later, we are both Zen Buddhist Priests working to end the legacy of racism in this country. Where should we meet to march with those who were also there at the first march. Also please clarify the time of the panel discussion involving those people who attended the march 50 years ago. Appreciatively, Catherine Anraku Hondorp

Can you please tell me if there will be a special area for the president’s speech for disabled/wheelchair participants? Thank you.

  • VanWhite

I’m being told that the speeches begin at 1:00 pm and that it might even be later than that. So I see no potential for overlap. I fear that there is real potential of misinformation and that people should be certain thier information is accurate otherwise well intentioned people could be unnecessarily discouraged in thier efforts. We wouldn’t want that to happen. Perhaps some out there would!

Now is the time to come together, not criticize; as with any event, things don’t always go smoothly. Could some things have been done better? Sure, but that happens with any event. Instead of criticizing, come out and participate; if you feel things could be done better, then volunteer to help out with the next event…..See you there!

The march on Saturday the 24th was NOT a youth march. National Action Network billed it as a MARCH ON WASHINGTON to realize the dream, not a Youth march. Go to the website and see for yourself. Apparently, no one is willing to discuss just why there are two marches. For the sake of the 50th anniversary and the legacy of MLK, let’s just leave it at that.

This was a horrible logistical nightmare, i stood in line for 2 hours, there was ONE entrance, 8 metal detectors and only 4 worked!, what!!?, The saddest part about today was the police taking away the seniors who may have missed seeing the original march because they needed medical attention. I saw so many seniors, some with “i was here 50 years ago” shirts walking away with their heads bowed down because of this logistical nightmare. some were waiting there since 9am, since 9am!! and no they did not enter. They told us that they would shut the gates at 12, so many left at 12, then they said, we’re playing, and said the gates will close at 1, so many left at 1, then we just waited.. i waited, before i had to leave. it’s 2:49 right now, i was waiting since 10am and im leaving. How can this be a commemoration of a speach for The people, when the people arent even allowed in. I like how on tv they arent showing the hoards of people that were not given access, but only the ones that are seated, and the ones that had tickets.

  • Tyrone Guerra

Extremely disappointed with the organization of the event for the general public. We drove up from North Carolina to attend; we found ourselves on the mall in a crowd of hundreds, if not thousands, of people who were unable to get through security. We were told that only four or five officers were checking bags and letting the public through the gates. We waited for three hours with thousands of others only to give up — as many others had already done — and leave to watch the President’s speech on TV.

How could it have been unexpected that thousands of people would want to attend and line up in the general public entrance? Who is responsible for the lack of adequate security personnel? Was this a deliberate decision to turn away hundreds or thousands of people? Or were we simply considered expendable?
