50th Anniversary March on Washington
  • 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

On August 27th hundreds of citizens attended the 2013 Conference on Civil Rights: Marching Forward By Looking Back. The following morning, on August 28, 2013, thousands of citizens, from across this country, converged upon our nation’s capital to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.
This site provides opportunities for people to share remembrances of and pictures from both marches. Additionally, visitors to this site can get updates on a variety of ongoing civil rights initiatives intended to make Dr. King’s dream a reality.

“MARCHING FORWARD BY LOOKING BACK: A COLLECTION OF REMEMBRANCES FROM THE 1963 MARCH ON WASHINGTON”

image
This is the most important collection of personal remembrances ever assembled on the great March on Washington.  Congressman John Lewis and Julian Bond’s recollections provide the insider perspective of the march while the personal remembrances of countless others allow readers to get a more intimate and personal view of the ’63 March on Washington.

Every page and every picture of this book pulls you back into the history of the civil rights movement  in America yet simultaneously pushes you forward into an examination of where these leaders and march participants believe we need to go as we struggle as a nation with ineffective and segregated urban schools, escalating urban violence, and painfully stubborn headlines which remind us that racial profiling remains a part of America’s landscape.
This is a must read for anyone who believes that sometimes you have to look back before you can march forward.

50 incredibly powerful pictures (from the 2013 50th Anniversary March on Washington) accompany each of the 50 essays and remembrances.

It would be nice to have a “Look Inside” feature for this book — are you using the photography of Rowland Scherman (copyrighted) throughout the book? I would like to see what the inside of this book looks like before I purchase it! Thanks!

None of Mr. Sherman’s photographs were utilized. However there are 50 beautiful photographs of the 2013 50th anniversary March on Washington. I would encourage you to purchase a copy of this book. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

A few days prior to the 1963 March on Washington, a friend asked my father if he was planning to attend the “demonstration.” His response? “Whenever my wife and I step out
of our home, we are demonstrating … but, yes.” As an interracial couple (married for 52
years), who were active in civil rights protests, it was important to my father that we (my mother, younger sister and I) attend the March. I don’t remember much about the crowd, but I do remember my father proudly carrying his sign, while he, also, carried my younger sister. Not too long ago, my brother-in-law discovered a book, “King: The Photobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.,” and came upon our picture — a picture my father had no idea had been taken. What he did recall, however, was that my mother was beside him the entire March but, oddly enough, was not included in the photograph. In honor of my late father and the many others who fought and stood for our basic civil rights, I plan to, proudly, attend the 2013 March on Washington.
