50th Anniversary March on Washington
  • 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

On August 27th hundreds of citizens attended the 2013 Conference on Civil Rights: Marching Forward By Looking Back. The following morning, on August 28, 2013, thousands of citizens, from across this country, converged upon our nation’s capital to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.
This site provides opportunities for people to share remembrances of and pictures from both marches. Additionally, visitors to this site can get updates on a variety of ongoing civil rights initiatives intended to make Dr. King’s dream a reality.

    Thank you for your support!

Walter Cooper

Doctor Walter Cooper has lead an amazing life.  His work and contributions to the fields of science, education, and civil rights have paved the way for many people of color.  Part of Doctor Cooper’s own journey took him to Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963.  As part of the making of “Marching Forward  By Looking Back: The Legacy of the March on Washington”, civil rights lawyer and author Van Henri White listens and learns as Doctor Cooper remembers the March that changed the world.

This audio clip allows you to hear excerpts of Mr. White’s phone interview with Doctor Cooper.  Copies of “Marching Forward by Looking Back” (which includes the remembrances of others involved in the March including Congressman John Lewis, Julian Bond, and many others) are available in the “Store“.

Thank you for putting together this collaboration of influential people. Hearing his experience and a real life account of what happened, I had to hold back my tears. They fought so hard for black people like myself to go to college and live a better life. I am a 25 year old college student who is graduating in the spring with my bachelors in social work and I appreciate everything they did during the civil rights movement. I am writing this on my way to the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington!
